Change Background, Colors, and Themes
Chapter 1: Change Background, Colors, and Themes
Welcome to Lesson 16! In this chapter, you will learn how to make Windows look and feel like your own. Changing the background, colors, and themes is one of the easiest ways to personalize your computer. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to customize your desktop wallpaper, adjust accent colors, and apply complete themes to create a workspace that suits your style and boosts your productivity.
What Are Background, Colors, and Themes?
Think of your Windows interface as a room. The background (or wallpaper) is the picture on the wall. The colors are the paint on the window frames and furniture. A theme is a complete decoration package that changes the wallpaper, colors, sounds, and even mouse pointers all at once. Windows comes with several built-in themes, and you can also create your own.
Step 1: Change Your Desktop Background
Your desktop background is the image you see behind your icons. Here’s how to change it:
- Right-click on an empty area of your desktop.
- Select Personalize from the menu. This opens the Settings app directly to the Personalization page.
- Click on Background in the left sidebar.
- Under "Personalize your background," choose from these options:
- Picture: Select a single image from your computer or choose one of the default Windows pictures.
- Solid color: Pick a single color for a clean, distraction-free look.
- Slideshow: Choose a folder of images that will rotate automatically. You can set the interval (e.g., every 10 minutes) and whether to shuffle the images.
- If you choose "Picture" or "Slideshow," you can also adjust the Choose a fit option (Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, Center, or Span) to control how the image fits your screen.
Step 2: Customize Colors
Colors affect the accent color of taskbar, Start menu, title bars, and window borders. Follow these steps:
- In the Personalization settings, click on Colors in the left sidebar.
- Under "Choose your color," you have three modes:
- Light: White backgrounds, dark text.
- Dark: Black backgrounds, light text – great for reducing eye strain.
- Custom: Choose a separate mode for Windows and apps.
- Scroll down to "Accent color." You can:
- Let Windows automatically pick an accent color from your background.
- Manually choose a color from the palette or use the "Custom color" button to pick any color.
- Check the boxes under "Show accent color on the following surfaces" to apply the color to Start, taskbar, title bars, and window borders.
Step 3: Apply and Create Themes
A theme bundles background, colors, sounds, and mouse cursors into one package. Here’s how to use them:
- In Personalization, click on Themes in the left sidebar.
- Under "Current theme," you’ll see available themes. Click on any theme to apply it instantly.
- To get more themes, click Browse themes in Microsoft Store – you’ll find hundreds of free themes.
- To save your current customization as a new theme, click Save theme (or "Save for sharing") and give it a name. This is useful if you want to switch between different setups (e.g., work vs. personal).
Step 4: Advanced Customization – Transparency and Taskbar
For a modern look, enable transparency effects:
- Go to Personalization > Colors.
- Turn on Transparency effects. This makes the taskbar, Start menu, and other surfaces slightly see-through.
You can also customize the taskbar:
- Right-click on the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Toggle options like "Show taskbar on all displays" (if you have multiple monitors) or "Combine taskbar buttons" to save space.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Mistake: Applying a theme that changes your desktop icons or sounds unexpectedly. Fix: Always preview a theme before applying it. You can change individual elements later.
- Mistake: Using a slideshow with too many low-resolution images. Fix: Use a folder with high-quality images only.
- Mistake: Forgetting to save your custom theme. Fix: After making changes, always save the theme so you don’t lose your setup.
Practice Task
Now it’s your turn! Complete the following exercise to reinforce what you’ve learned:
- Open Settings > Personalization.
- Change your desktop background to a solid dark blue color.
- Set Windows mode to Dark and choose a green accent color.
- Enable transparency effects.
- Save this setup as a new theme named "My First Theme".
- Switch back to the default Windows theme, then apply your new theme again to confirm it works.
If you can do all these steps without help, you’ve mastered the basics of customizing Windows!
