Developed by Wispr Flow (San Francisco), the tool is built on OpenAI's Whisper model as its core speech recognition engine, augmented by a proprietary language processing layer that adds automatic punctuation, filler-word removal, and context-aware tone adaptation. Launched broadly in 2024, it runs on all major platforms: macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Web. Its primary purpose is to enable users to speak naturally in any app and receive clean, professionally formatted written text without manual typing.

Architecture & Performance Features

Wispr Flow operates as an intermediary layer between voice input and the operating system. When the user presses a hotkey, audio capture begins and is sent to Wispr Flow's servers where it is transcribed via Whisper. A language processing layer then applies automatic punctuation, removes filler words (e.g., "um," "uh"), and adapts tone and style based on the active application (email, chat, document). The final text is inserted directly into the active input field. The tool supports 100+ languages and learns user-specific names and jargon through a custom dictionary and snippets.

Notetaker Capability

Notetaker refers to the tool's ability to capture spoken notes and meeting content hands-free. Users can activate a continuous recording mode that captures speech and converts it into organized notes. On paid plans, longer note history is retained and can be exported to apps like Claude and ChatGPT for further processing. This makes the tool suitable for business meetings, interviews, and lectures.

Integration & Compatibility

The tool works system-wide, meaning it is compatible with any desktop application or browser without requiring per-app integrations. However, no public API is currently available, limiting its use in advanced automation or enterprise system integration. Arabic support is partial; while Whisper supports Arabic, the formatting and context optimization layer performs best with English.
